It's an M47N (I think) engine.
The N version overcame the chain problems experienced by some, so......

Surprised to see 10 year old BMW 3-series listed as a reliable choice,
E9x was a step change@slim_boy_fat - I'd agree electrics are the main problem (mechanicals : fuel sensor was a £90 part, starter motor was £110 + £60 for a replacement gasket set & 4 hours labor, the rear shock is a fair consumable)
The random warnings (emissions / bulbs / pads / abs ) are a pain, but the total electric failure (as if battery had been removed) means I can't trust it - RAC came out and can't recreate the fault so it's still hiding ready to fail again. Full service history is no protection against future electric issues.
I'm not impressed, especially as it's the first "expensive" car I've bought for more than 10 years
parts are reasonable wear ant tear apart from £400 door seals on the 46
I have a silver 2011 2.0 VW Crafter van in my workshop with 973.000miles on the clock - it only needs a coolant bottle and a turbo.
It goes to Latvia and back once a week to take parcels and collect food back and does a 2675 mile round trip.
Edit : failed LEDs in the rear lights are common, the only solution is to replace the £180 light cluster!
That's madness, I find it hard to believe that it's not possible to desolder a failed LED and solder in a new one. I know that there are a couple of 'specialists' who repair these fancy digital displays/speedo's that are in cars nowadays, I bet that they may take on these units too.
!!!!! I'm going to be getting in and out a bit more mindfully now!
That's not exactly fair, they will be very easy miles compared to say a local builder or delivery van. It would be great if, when buying a used car, you could get outputs like average speed, time spent in each gear, number of start-ups/average journey distance e.t.c, e.t.c, e.t.c.... the number of informative bits of information that a car could quite easily log alongside total miles covered is huge. But to my knowledge, no one does so.

A few years ago i was visiting a friend that used to live on a council estate in posh N. London- muswell hill to be precise, this bloke (a black taxi driver!) came out of the house with a plasma tv, puts it in the comunal bin and smash it with a hammer! The same type of: if i cant have it nobody will!I know
Some people are afraid if they throw something out and you have it you'll make a profit and have one up on them or something whereas I'd give anything away rather than throw and cause waste
Vag 2.0 CR tdi engine is a gem, very reliable and dependable. I service a fleet of mercedes sprinters that do same type of driving to italy, spain and uk. They each have in excess of a million km but the owners go the extra mile by having spare injectors, fuel pumps, sensors and even spare engines at home so if they break then its easy to fix at the side of the road!I have a silver 2011 2.0 VW Crafter van in my workshop with 973.000miles on the clock - it only needs a coolant bottle and a turbo.

I have a seat exeo tdi, its nearly 500k on the clock, not had major work done: clutch, timing belts, suspension arms and a rear wheel bearing. Starts on button and averages about 4 L of diesel /100km. Engine is all original, hasnt been touched...
We do not see in our workshop too many high mileage vehicles.
