As above really, found this hold in my car today were the rear shocker mounts, but I don't have a clue were to start, just wondered if anyone could give me some ideas and pointers (or just do it for me ha)
Any chance you can repair it from above?
Looking at it there seems to be four or maybe five spot welds retaining that cup. Drill them out to get to the stuff behind it.
If you are confident in your welding ability, What I would do is Mark quite a cross on the panel with french chalk/scriber etc crossing the centre of the mounting hole, then cut out the rotten metalwork, Drill out the spot welds holding the cup, Then fashion 1.6mm plate to replace the cut-out section and reweld the cup to it, Using the previously marked lines to position the hole centre,
^^ and have a good look at the other side as that might need the same treatment, what vehicle is it? Often repair sections are available if its a common issue .
The panel is spot welded in place so you have several options: repair in situ by cutting out rust and welding in a new section, remove spot welds and remove a section of the panel and repair and weld back in or replace with a new section.
You can make a new repair section, get one from another vehicle or buy one if repair sections are available.
Yea the strengthening plate/cup is spot welded on, I think that bit might be save able if I replace one of the legs that are spot welded on? Problem is once I cut the rota out, there is still the inner skin left.
The car is a 89 volvo 340, there aren't alot of panels available for these cars so that bit will have to be made. Tbh Its completely out of my league, I know bits and bats and can do abit of welding, I'm trying to teach myself this kind of repair so any help appreciated.
I'm thinking remove the strengthening plate/cup, make the repair panels is 3 bits, cut the rott out and weld the new stuff in and then replace the strengthening plate?
Dose that sound about right? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Buy a pair of gp4 rear turrets for a Mk2 Escort and get them welded in, you might need to adapt a bit to suit your shock length but they look like they would fit.
The only way I can see to do it properly is to cut out all the weak metal and replace the lot.
Once you have it removed, you should be able to grind / drill the spot welds to release the "star" plate and re-use that.
