I'm still restoring my 1977 Mini Special ...only 6 years now!
I bought a Migatronic Rallye 166 for £200....then discovered this forum and read the reviews - doh! I have been using it for the last 6 years, obviously not that frequently. Learnt a lot from this site and think my welding is pretty good at times.
Completed repairs in the boot, nearside floor and sill, both A posts and half the floor on the offside. The welds aren't bad but I seem to do a lot of grinding back also consistency seems a bit of a problem. Still have the offside floor to complete, sill and front end from the scuttle panel onwards - so quite a bit.
I'm thinking about changing the machine. The Rallye is a huge box taking a lot of room in my small garage. It does not have a Euro torch. I have stuck with the same settings for years because there is little choice. The torch lead is bound with electical tape to secure a bodged 'command wire' (don't know what its called) by the previous owner. On the plus side it has not let me down for years.
Should I keep what I have and try to improve my technique or buy a new one?
I've read about the Sealeys, Clarkes, inverters and transformers but am confused. I also looked at the Parweld XTE 171C MIG Welder. It also looks big but is backed by Weldequip who have a good name on here. Did find I could get it considerably cheaper elsewhere.
Can someone please advise me what features I should be looking for in a new one?
