Hay fever.....

Had a right nightmare the last few days, my hay fever is getting worse, year on year! Anyone have problems of, without warning, violent sneezing and nose runnig like a tap, ears popping, throat sore and itchy, etc, etc. Its really getting me down, especially when wearing a welding helmet in th middle of a run!

I go running cross country running once a week, between 5 and 6 miles, and I can feel my airways closing up when I am near Rape, I end up with a whistle from my chest.

I thought I was imagining it but I too have noticed mine worse this year.I can cope with the sneezing seven or more times but the sore palette and itchy eyes are terrible.

Air fed welding mask does help, especially if you have fabric bit that elastics around your face as well and use a good filter or rig up your own pollen filter. Other than that I used to just stuff balls of tissue paper up each nostril and just breathe through my mouth when not welding, not ideal but it did ease the symptoms for me.

The only really hopeful thing I can say is you seem to grow out of it as you get older, I know I have, I used to be really ill with it, nowadays I can manage with an anti-histamine and some sneezing plus I take one teaspoon of local wild flower honey every morning all season starting around Feb/March, too late for you this year but worth trying next.

I am taking tablets and have nose sprays ,etc. but to no avail. As for it reducing as you get older, I didn't get it untill my late 20's and now 48, so I hope it starts going soon!

It's intriguing that hay fever and ashma seem to be on the increase. I have never suffered thankfully, my wife does but neither of my kids do. I was always a believer that my upbringing made a difference as my dad was a stockman and we lived in the yard, making dens in the hay,playing in the fields always had dogs. My kids are always outside grubbing about in something. My theory was disproved for the first time recently when I met a guy locally who grew up on a farm and he is a sufferer. He was the first one I had ever met.

It's weird how people suddenly start suffering later in life, I would love to know what the triggers are. I guess it may not even be the pollen that is the cause, it could be something else that makes you more sensitive.

I've read that eating honey that was made by bees local to you can make a difference, not sure how true that but I'm just glad I'm not affected because it does look like misery for some.

I've done that when I've had a cold, stops you keep blowing your nose and making it sore, my wife used to really laugh about until she tried it.

I've had it for over 40 years. Some seasons are better than others. This year is not too bad compared to last year. It comes and goes some years better than others. I've tried also responsible of treatments. Currently on nasal spray benadryl and eye drops. All free thanks to the Scottish government.
Funnily enough it's the wetter weather that makes it worse. We had a warm dry spring which helped. Started getting worse when the rain came still soon be Christmas

One factor could be that hedges have been ripped out and prairie farming of crops has taken over, so now, there are vast tracts of the stuff, and no windbreaks?
When I was a kid, I don't recall anybody being allergic to peanuts, and I don't recall anybody dying from wasp stings.
When I joined the mob, we had no central heated billets (well they were-there was a coke stove in the middle of the room). We moved into modern centrally heated billets and common colds and flu increased dramatically.

Soft livin is turning us into wooftahs, we need to go back to bread and dripping for bait at work, 20 woodbines a day, and five pints of mild n bitter before cycling 5 miles home to a full fry up.

I used to get bad hay fever in the UK, never had it as a kid, it came on when I was 25 ish. Itchy throat, eyes etc the full monty. Had to fill up on anti histamines and jabs from private doc-fortunatley they worked as you could get medically discharged for it.

I get a touch of it out here, but not a problem -unless you sneeze in a full face bike helmet-but I wear an open face and sneeze into the breeze and let the white van man tailgating me cop it on his windscreen.

I think I read somewhere that a light smear of something like Vaseline inside each nostril helps by trapping some of the pollen - you'd need to ensure you didn't use way too much then sniff vigorously......... Blow only!!

Asthma, eczema and hayfever are all from the same family of allergens. If you have one you are likely to develop one or both of the others at some point.

With oil seed rape it isn't the pollen that's the issue as it's so heavy it can only travel a few CM. It's the volatile organic compounds it gives off that is the irritant.

there is a product on the markey called prevalin i think. this uses a clay like fullers earth that is in a nasal spray and coats the inside of your nasal passages and acts as a barrier to the allergens. There are no active ingredients in it either. I tried it once. didn't work. you have to get it up your hooter before the pollen gets there.

I suffer every year with it, I tried all the over counter pills and potions and nothing worked that well. Most of the pills the doc gave me worked for the first course then I had to change onto something else. I asked about the injection but they refused, I even offered to pay for it myself. In the end a young doc suggested I try a combination of these two pills, levocetirizine 5mg and montelukast 10mg. It worked and has done for the past four years. I get the odd day where I get itchy eyes but nothing like I used to. Before getting these pills I coughed, sneezed, wheezed, eyes watered constantly and my nose ran all the time. summers are almost bare-able now.

mine was put down to getting a face full of tear gas (by mistake I hasten to add) but I have often wondered if air conditioning could have some impact? my mate has the aircon in his on all year round-he reckons it stops misting up in winter??
anyway, he reads the news on line, but open a newspaper now and he starts wheezin n a sneezin like one of Fred Dibnahs steam injuns starting up.
Never had the problem before he had aircon as I recall.

Aircon does 100% help with the misting in winter, the system is also more likely to last if it's used. Some vehicle now have the compressors running on lower duty cycle even when the aircon is turned off.

I know it's often said tongue in cheek but the whole "We're getting soft" carries some weight. I'm only in my 40s yet we didn't live in a house with central heating till I was in my teens. I have never had a single day off work in my working life other than after a car crash where I couldn't walk but that doesn't really count as me phoning in sick.

My lads would rather be outside than in and when they are in they are normally watching youtube videos of stuff they could build outside, they were swimming in the stream in March, it was savage cold. They are rarely ill, and the eldest takes pride in the fact he has a 100% record at secondary school. They are not the best at hand washing either.

The bit that concerns is the number of people who start suffering later in life and the number of people I know who use inhalers is increasing, surely it must have something to do with modern life.

I started when I was about 12-13, I suffered like hell for about 20 years but I'm now in my forties and don't suffer anywhere as bad, the best pills for me were Piriton but they made me really drowsy, I was that dosed up on them doing my end of school exams I fell asleep during one exam and the teacher came over and woke me up, good job or I'd have failed that exam as I'd only just started it.

That's what I've read as well so I thought it was worth a try, we let the local bee keeper keeps his hives in our field just behind our house, can't get much more local than that

Ime 55 and this year is the only year ive ever got it in my whole life...told my missus i had a cold last weekend which i thought it was but its this hey fever malarky she reckons...i feel sorry for you lads who get this every year as its real nasty sh$t to have
