Eml and mot

Afternoon all,
I believe we have a few mot testers here,does an engine management light being lit fail an mot now? I can't seem to get a definite answer as mine illuminates now and again, so I turn it off and it stays off for a while, my passat tdi is going in for an mot next week and you can guarantee it will pop up to say hello, I know what the cause is but I just wondered if it was an automatic fail now? I know it used to be an advisory.

No its not a fail at present.

Airbag light is a fail if it doesn't come on or doesn't go out (So no more whipping out the bulb or covering the light with tape)
EML still gets you an advisory

what about connecting it to the oil light??

What's the underlying problem? Got any fault codes, before you try to circumvent it?

Wouldn't work anyway because it wouldn't show self test procedure. It would only go out when engine starts

So the tester has to watch all the dash lights when the ignition is switched on

I know what it is,it's the egr valve that occasionally has a twitch,I think it's close to retirement soon. Only does it every couple of weeks so I just turn it off but just thought I'd check incase it does it during the test.

2. Supplementary Restraint Systems (SRS) lamps
When testing SRS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) lamps we are only looking to see if the lamp indicates if there is a fault with the system. If no lamp is present or it doesn’t illuminate then it can’t indicate a system fault, so it can’t be failed. Some vehicles may also incorporate warning messages on dash board displays; these are in addition to any MIL lamps and should not be used as a reason for rejection.

You can get a £3 bypass resistor for that problem on ebay.

Three quid for a resistor, they don't even cost that much at Maplins.

As far is i understand the bit of tape i put behind the lens does the same thing and was free.

The legs of a resistor fit perfecly into the seat side airbag socket of an Audi, no plug needed.

Jees, I only mentioned that a repair can be effected at low cost.
9 out of 10 airbags need the plug as it happens, because the terminals are shorted together by a bridge when unplugged.

Carry on with the tape by all means. Add some more when you get an ABS fault.

Found out as an upholsterer that even removing a seat with the ignition off is enough to put the air bag light on on newer german cars.Of course it won't go out without the proper scanning gear.Liked my old mazda, you cure the fault and the ecu is clever enough to switch the light off.

Interesting, I did not know that, obviously the legs of the resistor are doing just that. It sounds like a bodge but it is in one of the Audi bulitins along with the pdf to print out and get owner to sign, they justify it because the car (A4 B5) was crash tested with and without seats fitted with side airbags.
