Welding bench

Decided it was about time i made a bench to work from instead of sharing my dads stuff, plus it comes just in time for a job ive got on where i need to make a jig and can use the top to tack too.

I usually use my dads workshop (until the bigger one is built) but he's gone and filled it with his tools and equipment so had to pop up the gazebo, dont laugh!!

Any way, i used 50x50x3mm box and a 2x1m 5mm sheet steel. It has a 50mm lip on the front and left side for clamping to and is an absolute god send, i should i built one ages ago. Not finished it yet, im going to make a shelf using the bottom bracing bars and some hard wood i removed off a wagon i converted.

Your grinder seems to be missing a guard.

Have a new safety warning at work about using grinders with no guards and over sized disks a welder was killed recently. That must be a fire retarded gazebo

I must admit, i never use the grinder without a guard but inbetween welding the bench together i had to slice some tube down the centre line using a 1mm inox cutting wheel, (slap my wrists, a big no no i know). As for the gazebo, i had my rother on hand with an extinguisher just incase. It was one of those 'one off's' that has to be done every now and again!

That's when the accidents happen. I know a bloke whose knuckles look like twiglets because he one used a grinder with no guard on. If the job can't be done using a grinder with a guard on, you need to use a different bit of kit.

I'd be less worried about the lack of grinder guard than the question of how long you and your welding bench can continue to defy gravity.

Drains, what can I say, I live in a steep road! I'll have to weld some lips to the edge of my table cos everything ends up falling off. Honestly though I didn't realise the pics were like that I will change them when I get on the laptop.

As for the grinder though, the guard is now back on, not a good example to anyone looking at this forum for tips etc.... I should no better also as I teach panel beating and welding as well as have my welding business!

Maybe draw one on, or cut it out of the photo when you turn them all 90 degrees

9" cutting discs on a 4" grinder? no they are in the picture necause im using a chop saw too.

very nice bench

only point i would say is make sure your welds go right round the box

it appears although i may be wrong, that there is a hole on some of the corners where the weld isnt quite long enough

S410man, the Welds do go all the way around the box, I've just had a look and it is soot on the corner of the welds. One thing I must admit though is that on the lower brace I missed two welds but these are now welded up
