Cheap Wire Sort Of

probably only any good if you live near Market Drayton

0.8 15 kg rolls of mild steel wire for a fiver or less says it has a tiny bit of surface rust on the top few layers

Best I have seen is about $17 for a 11lb roll. But then I only look at name brand wire. A good 2lb roll is near $10, but can be found for a bit less.

That is a 30lb roll. You'll need a MIG that can take 12" rolls.

If the wire has oxidized, then it is probably cheap off-brand wire. I would avoid it. Notice it does not specify the brand or type of wire. The seller has "Prime Weld" wire listed on other listings. Never heard of it.

Prime Weld is Chinese
To be honest rusty chinese wire doesnt appear to be a good combination. Usually, you get what you pay for.

I have Lincoln wire and it works well. Hobart wire has been good also.

A good wire has made a big difference in the quality and cosistency of my welds. Cheap wire with a low-end MIG is a recepe for doing chicken poop welds.

I'm still getting through a rake of Weldability wire I bought a few years ago, which is ok, but I'd love to have a go with some certified top quality gear, if only to see the difference (i'm happy to pay for the quality).

Hi Al do you know who makes GMS (Chester) own brand wire? I've always got on pretty well with it.

I think it is from Turkey but I'm not certain.

The real test of a wire is when you are welding over 300 amps. Some wires work fine at low end parameters but turn up the handle and they stop feeding, send spatter everywhere and the welds look boiled.

You'll know what I mean then
The standard Lincoln wire is good to about 350 amps but they also do one
that is OK to over 450 amps, Supramig Ultra.

I spent a fair while yesterday, trying to find where I could get hold of some Supra Mig, having used weldability mostly too.
But now I know where it comes from, I'll be off to the gas shop tomorrow at some stage to see if I can get hold of any - like yourself, to get a comparison.

By the time I gave up (or forgot what I was looking for!), yesterday, I was statring to assume this was one of those things that are abundant in some places (eg USA), and rare in others.(eg here!)

Does anyone have any idea how much it is? Don't want to get there to find it's as pricey as mig brazing wire. Those sort of prices leave me all pale 'n' shaky!

Should be no more than £25 for a 15kg spool of 0.8mm.
