Hi All,
I needed to replace the top mount on a Mitsubishi Lancer and hey presto the top of the strut has a section with two flats which needs to be held stationary while the nut below is rotated.
So, below a solution .... a homebrew version of the manufacturer special tools...
I milled two flats on the 17mm 1/2 inch drive deep socket to take a conveniently sized 25/32 inch wrench... The socket was horribly tough to mill even with an inserted carbide cutter (especially as I'm new to milling work). The narrowest portion of the socket was bored out on the lathe to pass a 3/8 inch socket extension.
Then starting with a piece of 16mm round steel (EN24T as far as I know), I milled out a 3/8 inch square recess on one end and the necessary flat sided recess to fit the strut on the other end.
And this is how it fits in use...
For reference and for anyone searching, , the Mitsubishi special tool is part number MB991680 comprised of MB991681 and MB991682.
The top mount is now changed incidentally. And there was much rejoicing.
