Wondered if anybody could offer any advice.
I have a 160 amp gasless migwelder, I have only used it on gass along time ago and find it more practical to use flux cored wire, especially since I use the welder in outdoor conditions welding everything from farm gates to old cars. I am self tought but can put a neat weld together if I put my mind to it. That said I have limmited knowledge of welders.
I am now looking to buy a large welder to be able to fabricate farm equipment for tractors and trailers etc. I wil probably only use the unit for a ny decent period about once every 2-3 months on average, but think the money saved over paying other fabricators will justify the purchase when you consider the convenience of having it for quick fix jobs also.
I would like to be able to weld upto 20 mm plate and be able to use on single phase suply with or without gas
I have been looking at a 300 amp SIP weldmate unit as being the best compromise between cost and weld thickness. It is supposed to do 15mm, which would be plenty for most of my work and I guess I build up runs if I realy need more weld on a 20mm plate.
I looked at SIP as I thought they were suposed to be a quality brand. I don't know if a cheaper brand would do with the level of work I will be doing, but I want the unit to last.
Can anybody suggest any other units makes I should be looking at?
Also the supplier I have spoken to can't offer weld wire greater than 0.8mm, though his unit takes up to 1.2mm.
I take it I am correct in assumming that I wan't to be using the largest wire for larger weld thicknesses. Or is 0.8 fine?
Any advice greatly received.
