I would like to make 2 containers of approx 5L each which would fit in the space enclosed within the crash bars of my motorbike - that was the weight is low and forward and makes use of space where I can't fit anything else. Unfortunately a 5L jerrycan doesn't quite fit and if I make something it will have to be a bit of an odd shape to fit within the bars and also have some way to hold it in place.
So what material would be best - ignoring the welding alloy would be light with thick walls and so would stand-up to any dings/bashes pretty well. The problems are welding it (with a mig) - and the price of the alloy somewhere around the £50 region maybe a lot more. (for 4 or 5mm)
Mild steel could be done but to keep the weight down the walls would be thin so may not stand up so well if it were to get bashed.
Stainless is as above but wouldn't rust but I have no idea how much more difficult it is to weld and how expensive it is.
So what would you think? Would I have any chance of making any of them waterproof or would I need a liner of some sort (what I would count on)
Final option - possibly the best? is to keep looking for plastic bottles I could mount somehow.
