That's exactly what's being going on. That's been run for years with the belt cover sitting on a shelf under the bench.I don't think the covers been touched, its cosmetically in excellent condition compared to the rest of the painted areas. If anything, the inside is dirtier which made me wonder if its been run with the lid off for ease changing the speed.

Funny really that yours lives in Derbyshire - they were made in Swadlincote, and mine is in NZ, and both are being restored at the same time. The internet is amazing.
I am a huge fobco fan. Bet those people could tell a story or two.Indeed. I have a friend in Swadlincote who knows some people who worked for Fobco, they live around the corner. I'm assuming the machine numbers were sequential mine is stamped No.38834

Here’s mine
Looked for one for ages. Went to a machinery dealer up the road and he had 2 7 eights and a 10 eight in the shed. Unfortunately the 10 eight was sold.Lucky you! I'd only sell my Star for a 7/10 eight, or a Progress 4E.
Good luck getting the switch back in with it assembled. It's much easier on the bench resting on a towel so the paint isn't scuffed, that's my personal experienceGot back in the garage today after many weeks away and started assembling the drill. Went together pretty well, concentrated on getting the pre load right on the angular bearings it makes a real difference to the run out/wobble from my manual testing. Also spent time getting the return spring tension just as I want, failed to start with as I set it without the collar and chuck on so their weight screwed the balance action
Few issues with paint here and there as it seems whilst I was working away the casting somehow ended up on the floor with bikes thrown on it! nothing a touchup won't fix. Still got to sort the broken motor, at the moment feeling I may go for a new Crompton equivalent or maybe a VFD system. Its all assembled dry at the moment need to research what grease to use.

Thanks for the pointer not thought of that , If i go the VFD route I may use a POT and make the switch into a speed control. The replacement switch I sourced (used in tanks apparently) looks bigger than the original!
What a great freebie congrats!
Must update the thread with my progress, its back in working order but needs a few bits finishing off. Managed to get the original motor back up and working, the drill is rock solid and so smooth to use and its been getting a lot of use
Keep us updated on your progress.
