For me its stainless steel lighting, the reasoning being it was something I did when my Dad died several years ago and always reminds me of him.
Last time I saw my parents together was when I dropped them off at the airport to go on holiday, then the dreaded phone call from my mother informing me of what had happened.
Prior to this I had made stainless hand railing as their drive was steep, and widened their drive and concreted it and poured concrete steps at the same time to make it easier during the winter for them rather than slipping as they were getting older. They lived in a quiet area with good neighbours apart from the one next door, who to be polite was a **** who knew everything about everything and when I advised him not to have a solid wooden gate, he went and bought one and put it up. Within a month he was attacked and robbed by someone hiding behind his gate, Karma is a wonderful thing.
He knew I was building posts and tall wrought iron gates and had to get in their first as he is that sort, and we were planning a number of upgrades for my parents property as a mini crimewave was hitting the area and this and my father dying hastened the process. The gates were finished and installed and I was fitting remote control lighting to the property and had acquired the transmitters and receivers so mother could pull up on the drive and light up the front, side, and rear of the property and see through the wrought iron gates and down the side of the property.
Doing the side and rear lights was easy but mother wanted something special for the front light, I took her to work one Saturday to distract her and she went through every supplier catalogue we had with lighting in them and she could not find anything she liked, she saw several features she liked. I marked them and has one of our designers combine the features she liked into one design which she loved, the only trouble being the glass which was a tapered square design and ironically I came across a thick glass dish in our local Tesco which was perfect, even better, it was on offer for £1 so I had 2.
The light was very intricate and even so I managed to collect all the offcuts to make it from work and out with the TIG, it was so complex that it took me a fortnight to make it and finish all welding and dress the welds, it was taken to work and one of our finishers polished it so well then etched my Dad's name into the inside of it. It was duly installed and the 12 volt regulated supply was connected to it and it works perfectly. I love making the intricate stainless lighting and with a hobby of electronics and LED's I can make them all day long, and everyone is unique.
