Hi guys.
I have a Wickes 450w tile cutting machine. The type with a tray to hold water under the blade to cool it.
The blade wore out and when we tried to put my friend's blade on (from a more modern machine) it wouldn't fit (hole in middle of blade is too small). You think 'Hmmm, don't tell me my machine has got a weird old-sized blade or something. It's only about 10 years old '
Next step is Ebay, to look for new blade, but I haven't brought the machine into the house and find various bore sizes listed. So, before you commit to buy one, I need to go back to lock-up and measure bit on machine where blade fits.
Back in the now I continue browsing Ebay and find some blades are listed as 25.4mm - which is 1". Most are listed as 22.2 - which happens to be 7/8". There are also some listed as 25mm and I even saw a 23mm.
So I guessed mine must be the 25.4 as it was bigger than my friend's and that seems to be largest size listed anyway. There are also different disc diameters. 200mm comes up a lot for the 25.4 bore but most tile cutting discs seem to be 180mm.
So months go by and I never get round to measuring the machine until someone asks me to do some tiling for them. A day later they ask again and I lie and say 'I've ordered a new blade for my machine and it'll be here soon' .
Now I really need to dig out the machine and measure it. I find a label on the machine which says the blade is 25mm. I assume they mean 25.4mm but the vernier confirms it's 25mm, not 25.4mm or 1" . I also establish I need a 180 blade not a 200.
So now I'm wondering if a 25.2 will be ok on a 25 machine. And also why do they make two sizes so similar?
At least if you get the 25.4 it would fit on a 25 machine but the reverse would no doubt generate a lot of head-scratching, cursing and half-round filing if you were unfortunate enough to be caught out by the .4mm quirk.
So to sum up I'm just wondering why they are in Imperial sizes on modern machinery but listed in more complicated metric form....
