Recently watched a programme about salvaging a wrecked oil tanker in Good old US of A.
The bow section was gone & the object of the salvage was to remove the stern section to prevent further pollution from the oil in the engine room.
The stern hull was cracked & the first part of the salvage was to seal the cracks & then brace the repair panels with steel section, before pumping dry to tow away.
I was totally amazed to see the divers underwater welding with what looked like standard arc welding gear i.e "normal looking" welding rods in an equally Normal looking clamp type rod holder.
Is it really that simple?
