Hmmm.
If there were any MIG wire handy, you could insert some in the feeder and see the smallest diameter it'll pull.
The distance you describe is about right for .045 diameter wire, which is a common size for feeder use.

What wrong with the adapter? They are usually a big hunk of brass, I don't see them breaking.

Post some picts of the adapter. The catalog seems to only show the rear part of some "universal adapter" TAK-1. Mine is just a big hunk of brass
