Think I might have to have another go, I was just on continuity setting.
Transistors (diodes) are current driven devices, i.e. they rely on current into the base emitter junction to function. Your meter's continuity setting will be a high impedance (i.e. low current source) so does not tell you what the junction is doing. The reading you get is the voltage across the junction. If that makes any sense to you we're on the same wavelength
