Afternoon all; I've just picked up a Chinese inverter MIG and have been having a play with it. I've spent a lot of time watching various videos on YouTube and also the ones on this site so have got an idea of the basics. At least I thought I did! When actually doing it myself I soon realised that the experts make it look really calm and controlled. It's quite a skill listening for frying bacon, thinking about stick-out, push or pull, gas flow, torch angle and even seeing the direction that you're trying to go in. I'm looking out for some scrap to properly practice on before I go anywhere near something that I want to weld for real but found some odds and sods to have a play with and to familiarise myself with my kit.
Have a gander at these
The upper 90 degree bend came apart pretty easily as expected but I was quite surprised at how strong the other one was. It didn't come off even with some pretty aggressive bending so hopefully I'm not a complete tool when it comes to getting it right in the future!
I was quite surprised at how hot the metal got and will certainly have to remember not to grab the work just after welding it. I suspect it's a lesson that is very quickly learnt...
