Oooooh spray mode....me likey....Not necessary. In the short distance from shroud to workpiece, at "normal" gas flows, the drooping of the shielding gas plume will be negligible.
This video shows MIG shielding gas flow. Although the video looks like it's taken of a horizontal welding position, the torch is angled at ~60 deg, so any obvious droop of the shielding gas would be fairly easy to see.
