This is a follow on from a post some time ago.
I was experiencing occasional trips on my ground floor ring main & at other times lost feed despite the mob not tripping. Using my neon diagnostic plug normally reserved for my caravan trips I determined I had lost the neutral return but strangely it would come back on & all would be back to normal. I questioned if the mcb might be on the way out the theme of the previous post.
However, some time has elapsed without a problem, that is till last night when the fault reared its ugly head again, loss of neutral return on certain plugs.
By chance, she who must be obeyed, mentioned she had been having difficulty getting tthe hoover plug in the socket near the bottom of the stairs.
Biting the bullet I pulled the socket off & was met by several cables minus their insulation & a broken return. The return clamp on the socket was completely destroyed & the socket is toast literally.. Temporaily I have cut away the damaged wiring & reconnected the ring main with chocolate box connectors. The live & return wires appear to have been pressed together & overheated.
My question is, one live & both return leads are now too short to reinstate a new socket. Is it acceptable to extend the wires with crimps, ideally Id like to pull out the wiring but it means pulling up a laminate floor & digging out plaster to go the other way.
