Recently bought myself an ESAB Tig Buddy 160 and have been getting to grips with TIG.
All has been going well, however I have recently had a couple of instances where the torch/tungsten has suddenly gone SUPER bright, I mean really Bright, the weld puddle has boiled and even though my face mask was adjusted to 13 I got Arc Eye which put a stop to proceedings for 5 minutes.
The metal I was welding was 3mm steel tube which in a previous life was a truck power steering cylinder. Amps were about 100 with a 1.6mm tungsten, 6 lpm and 100% Argon. Now, even though I was pretty sure I had cleaned the tube of any oil residue I'm wondering if the bright flare up was caused by oil contamination getting into the weld puddle ? ?
The only other thing which I was doing differently from previous occasions was using some very cheap "Super6" Gold tipped tungstens I recently purchased off ebay. Could these be the cause ?
Any other ideas ? Thanks.
