Dead on with town gas sealing small holes, the tar & napthalene in the gas made it self sealing to a limited extent. When the systems were switched to natural gas, initially gas was so dry it took moisture out of valve seals causing leaks, now I believe they artificially add moisture to stop the seals shrinking.Something rings a bell about town gas being that dirty that it used to self seal small leaks and if something was converted to 'mains' gas the leaks would reappear as the dirt was slowly eroded by the cleaner gas?
