HOEKA GLASS HOPPERapparently c-h-i-n-k-s of light is a banned word in my previous post. Just to be clear if anyones wondering, absolutely the correct usage and no racist overtones in the use of it.
shouldn't haver bought one that was worn I got one given that had light sun tan on but wasn't marked and cleaned up nicely .a bit of cillit bang and scotchpad bang and the rust had goneI spent ages looking for a used one, got one, then couldn't get it ground for a decent price or to decent accuracy. Was cheaper to buy a new granite one, came with certificate, delivered and guaranteed flat and cost £30. Some things are not worth buying used.
only way to check would be borrow an accurate surface plate use micrometre blue and rub them together and check for 100 percent coverage
Counter tops, glass and gravestones don't make good surface plates in terms of what a surface plate is. They MIGHT be flat enough to lap an old ally head down but equally they might make it much worse. What looks 'perfect' to the eye could be several thou or more out of flat. For a surface plate that would make it fit for the bin.
No its not, there's a variety of ways to check something for flatness. A camelback at various points, a precision straight edge with a torch as mentioned, optical flats, auto collimator, a cmm etc. Most of these are find a friend, but I have a few optical flats and a camelback to hand.only way to check would be borrow an accurate surface plate use micrometer blue and rub them together and check for 100 percent coverage
as u said and I know there's many ways but not to most people there isn't if u need it that accurate use the 3 plate method and start hand scrapingNo its not, there's a variety of ways to check something for flatness.
