After a long time searching for a good drill press I managed to pick up a Startrite Mercury mark 2 over the weekend. It's running fine, in good condition but it will need a serious clean. Anyway.
I only have single phase in my workshop so I have a couple of options. The obvious one is a new single phase motor. Not very expensive these days, but I like the idea of being able to run the drill at really low speeds. So I'm thinking the VFD route.
The motor currently on the drill is a 0.37KW aka 0.5hp and it can be star wired for 220V 3 phase.
But it that a bit low power for the drill??? Should I perhaps be looking for a bigger motor or is this one up to the job?
So my options are
1) New 230V single phase motor.
2) 0.37kw VFD to drive my current motor
3) Bigger 3phase motor + bigger VFD
Can anyone with a similar drill please weigh in. I prefer option 2 myself but it's a waste of money if the motor isn't powerful enough.
