All, some closure, sorry it's taken a while as I said it doesn't get much use!
I took an easy option first - change the battery and as one of the members here told me that with the older diesels there was enough fuel in the chamber of the injector pump for a cylinder, so even if the battery was lacking, it would normally start (my experience with the older Land Rovers) however modern pumps need several revolutions to charge a cylinder, so a weak battery can lead to poor starting.
So, new battery and we're back to the regular easy starting! Problem solved (for the moment) as with most inanimate objects it will find something else to go wrong next.....
