Ever since I've had my 160TM I've been frustrated by the short length of the earth lead. This came to a head when I moved the welder, pulled the earth clamp off the job, & theclamp disintegrated when it hit the floor.
I decided to fit a dinze socket in the front panel & make a new lead 3m long. I bought a new clamp, 3m of 25mm cable, a dinze plug & socket for about £25.
I expected to have a bit of a job fitting the socket, filing out the hole to match, but when I removed the grommet/cable grip I found the front panel already cut to fit. I cut the original cable away leaving about 6" & soldered a lug on it, & connected it to the rear of the dinze socket.
I thought this mod would involve a lot of fiddling around to make it all fit, but in the end it took about 20 minutes start to finish. I know that the 25mm cable is only rated to about 140 amps & it is a 150amp welder, but as the original cable turned out to be only about 16mm it has to be ok. I realise that this is all common sense to do, but I thought it might help someone that's thinking about doing it. Other Clarke welders may already have the front panel cut to fit being as many share the cases with the gas free range.
