Single Phase Motors ?

I've recently bought a small lathe with a single phase motor. The motor mounts to the left of the lathe and rotates it's pulley anti clockwise to drive the lathe via a pulley / belt. I want to turn the motor around and mount it under the lathe but doing so would reverse the direction of the drive. Can anyone think of a way mounting the motor and retaining the drive direction, or can a single phase motor be re-wired to run in a different direction ?

They can run in either direction. You use a start capacitor to force the direction. Have a quick Google for that, but it will depend on you motor. I have an only minilor lmodel lathe that has a reverse switch.

Basically there are two windings and a capacitor. the capacitor shifts the phase slightly for one of the coils, thus giving the direction. Depending on the motor you should be able to move the live to the other side of the capacitor to mage it run in reverse.

Thats the theory, in practice it would depend on the motor.

So to sum up yes it should be possible, but it will depend on your motor.

Some motors have instructions for reversing the direction printed inside the terminal box.

Can we have a photo of the motor and the connections, someone may recognise it.

As others said, it depends on the motor. If it's a capacitor start motor it's simply a matter of swapping over the ends of either the start windings or the run windings. I have fitted a reverse switch to my pillar drill this way.

Can you take a picture of the connections inside the motor, there might be 2 coloured alike wires going into the motor that need swapping around.

Thanks for the suggestions. The motor is a Crompton and Parkinson 1/4hp. I've not opened it up yet but will try to get some pics

There should be two coils two ends should be joined and the other ends separated by a capacitor and live on one. The joined end will be neutral. You may find six posts with various wires

OK, so have disasembled the motor, I know nothing about these things and can just about wire a plug. What am I looking at and what needs swapping where to reverse the rotation of the motor ?

Ordinarily you would swap Z and Z1 over, how many wires are connected to Z1, looks like a neutral and one other, check with your multi meter to see if you have resistance between the wire off Z and whichever that's connected to Z1 and swap them over.

Connection are labelled (left to right ) A, Z, AZ, Earth. Are you saying swap the two middle ones ?
