I haven't been working on my Mini for a while but thought some of you might like to see one of the non automotive projects I was working on this year.
I was asked by a friend earlier this year if I could make an Olympic style torch using recycled materials as a display piece for a gala so thought I'd have a go.
I started with a rough sketch to show the concept. This turned out to be a bit tighter than I was ultimately able to achieve.
After making template for the petals I transferred the shape onto a sheet of stainless from an old dairy farm.
In order to spread the light from inside I drew out a curved pattern onto the petals and pilot drilled them before shaping.
Next up was lots of beating on a leather bag.
Rough finish on the petals.
Having worn my arms out on the bag I took a rest and whittled a 2x4 into a form for the handle.
I flattened some scrap copper pipe and beat it over the form to make a handle cover.
Internal structure of the torch using some offcuts of tube and a lead light.
Roughly assembled to make sure it all fit together.
The base of the handle looked a little incomplete so I trimmed it with some vinyl.
I also made a stand to hold it on display.
AAAAAAAAAND finally here it is on stage with Eddie the Eagle.
