Hi all, i want to buy a TIG welder, but all the threads i read are just too much, too complicated and too confusing for my little brain. If you can direct me to a link, or links, that will be fine.
I have just got a small Alluminium welding contract, worth about £100 poss more a month, which will pay for the gear i need, the rest will be a hobby, making things for my classic car.
Below is a list of things on my mind. If you can help, please do, in basic English. Even if you only answer one, someone else may come along, and answer another. Sorry if you've heard it all before.
Many thanks in advance.
John.
1) Transformer v inverter. Is it just size and weight?
2) Some of the cheaper tigs have loads of knobs and switches, then i look at a Lorch at 5x the price, and it only has a few, is this because the Lorch does away with these, by being automatic?
3) I find a lot of welders don't really have a name as such, ie Lorch, Miller have their name displayed on the unit, is this because some companies make their own, from imported chinese components etc.
4) Water cooling is for proffessional work, where you hav'nt got time to stop,
where a cheaper air cooled overheats.
As i get answers, i will think of more questions.
If i have to spend £££'s on a unit, i probably will, just means saving up a bit more. i can always take good care of it, and sell at a good price if all goes wrong. Off out for a beer now, will be back later/tomorrow if too drunk.
Not done tig before, not really a welder, done some cheapo stick before, and a little mig, but i can see myself really enjoying tig. Love the photos on here,
of manifolds etc. Love the youtube vids. I'm addicted.
Speak soon.
