Hi,
About to embark on a welding class in the next few months to learn how to MIG weld.
I want to be able to do some minor weld repairs on my 1996 MX5. They all rust in the same place, where the rear arch meats the lower sill. Was quoted £800 to weld in two plates about 4 inch long by an inch and a half wide on lower sill!!! and a further £200 to weld a 20p sized hole in the floor right next to the sill. Aprt from these areas the rest of the car is totally sound and rust free.
Need some advice on buying a MIG welder that will fix the above problems. Will never weld anything else apart from the car and maybe new wheel arches in 2 years time.
Brother in law is a fabrciation engineer and MIG / TIG welds but I want to do it myself. He has suggested to me a Butters 130 amp welder with copper windings or a second hand ESAB. He said I should go for one with copper windings and not aluminnium ?? Also advised me to go for an auto darkening helmet.
What do you think of Butters MIG welders, seems to suit my budget better than ESAB! Will I find a benefit in the auto darkening helmet? or could I get away with a 'normal' MIG welding helmet with flip up front?
Thanks
Scott
