Hey guys hows it going, I am just getting ready for a job test but they are asking for a verticle up mig with open root !!! has anyone out there done this before and if you have what did you do. 8" plate 1/2" thick. Root, fill, and cap all with mig.
Usually open roots with mig are done verticle down, the rest of the joint (hot pass, fillers and cap) are usually all done vertically up, but as I say, the root is usually down.
the reason most people go vertical down is because its easier but nowere near as good as vertical up it took me a while to get the hang of it you need to turn your welder down a bit but you still get better penotration than going down. where i work if it has to be done vertical its always up we were told anyone does a vertical down on the machines may aswell leave
Regarding vert up. on the root you will have to make sure you catch the edges, maing sure your going at the right speed and ensure you grind back your stop/starts. Also be aware off non fused wire on the back of the plate if this happens you will need to grind back and reweld.
Now regarding the down hand, yes its quicker and its "just" ok yes it burns in but not the same way as when welding on vert. the down hand hand is ok for gates and railings and carbodys but totally unreliable for structural and pipe work.
infact if your caught welding downhand in a structural fab shop you would be given a verb warning worst case a written and if the case Brown smelly stuff hitting the fan "FIRED"
3RS your welcome to take this to UKW if you don't think were up to the job, a few months ago I wanted a quicker way to refurb large buckets, getting away from the 7018s, after contact on UKW, reading the oxelsond handbook and contacting a member on here who makes buckets, I decided to trail a few wires, a Union 71 FCAW 1.2, an inershield 1.2 Lincoln courtesy of technicAl, A 1.6 solid, A 1.2 solid, a 1.6 and 1.2 THYSSEN TG 55 Fe, metal cored, the long and short, was the metal cored wires were excellent in the flat, where the fluxed wires behaved out of position very well, the bohler certainly had on the data sheet it could be used down hand, in practice both myself and Tino (the other member) found it worm tracked......but that must be a setting and parameter issue, the Lincoln cored wires ran better BTW.....
