hello and why are u asking?? your profile says u are a fabricator welderHi guys
Im looking at buying a mig welder to make gates and railings with, but not really sure how many amps i will need? I wont be penetrating more then 10mm thick steel.....plus my budget is quite small. Any ideas??
if your just making gates and railings you can use a little 100amp gasless
10mm will be the thickness of the gate material not the depth of weldif your just making gates and railings you can use a little 100amp gasless
i do lol
or even a 70 amp ac transformer arc welder. there are welders on amazon for around 60 quid that will weld up gates.
to get 10mm penetration with a mig is going to cost you thousands though
if you intened to do this for a living or even a hobby you need more then 100 amps you want penetration in one pass not spend 20 minutes on preping the joint and multiple passes
I'm getting deja-vu here, 100 amps?!
Ideally you need a 180A+ mig for gates and railings to ensure they won't fall apart.

Not really, you'll most likely be wanting to stick 6-8mm together so bigger is most definitely better and 150A is good for maybe 5mm at a push.
If you're looking to do it to make a living then my suggestion is to buy the right machine first time rather than spend good money on something not up to the job.
yeah i suppose....ide only end up buying a more powerful machine later on, thanks everyone for your comments
