Holy thread resurrection Batman!
Apologies to all who commented & offered advice on here way back when I posted this thread.
I ended up waiting some more time before buying a new welder, then my PC broke and I lost my favourites etc and have now just re-discovered the site!
I'm now the owner of an Esab Origomag C150 mig machine. A friend of mine who welds a lot used it and thinks it's a superb machine. I know a couple of lads who weld for a living and they've also commented that it's a good piece of kit and probably ample for my needs.
I'm very pleased so far. Have had it some time now but don't often get the chance to practise sadly. I have however just bought an auto mask to replace the fixed shade one I've got.
When I got the welder from a guy I know at a welding company, he said that auto ones are great as a learner but as a full time welder he prefers a fixed shade one, and he reckoned it'd make me a better welder by persevering with it.
I've not heard anyone else say this theory so far, and I'm sure for him that suits him but I've given in and bought a new auto lid.
My friend locally has just bought an Esab OrigoTech helmet to replace his really old Esab auto one and he was extremly impressed with it.
I had a go with his old one and was amazed just how much easier it makes the job for a novice - I can see what I'm trying to weld at last!
So I've ordered the same helmet that he bought for £70 and I can't wait to get it and test it out (as I've some plating to do on my car's front panel).
Anyway - thought I should provide a conclusion to this 'what welder should I buy' question.
I appreciate all the responses on here, so apologies again for the slightly late update!
