Introduction:
Members will know why this promised thread has begun, if you don't it serves you right for not joining the forum and having the ability to follow the story from the start.
Why The Thread Exists:
Because I enjoy reading the threads of others and it's a forum strength to have such threads.
It hopefully will help me with members answering my questions as we go.
It may even benefit other small lathe owners.
What It's Not:
It's not going to be a thread of why I should have a Harrison or Boxford, why English is better than Chinese etc, any attempt to send it that way and clutter the thread will be removed, sorry but to keep the thread valuable to all it has to be that way.
My previous experience is limited to a bit of turning on a Warco that I housed in the garage for a couple of months, I did enjoy lathe work, know the very basics and that's about it, the level of that basic experience will become all too evident over the following months I am sure.
Ok, so after unloading I had a decision to make, put it together as it is or refurbish it, I rather like character and patina, as most of my workshop machinery proves so an assembly with a bit of sorting is the result.
The motor end casing had been damaged, it has probably been used like that for some time, I decided it would be repaired to provide a decent cable inlet area and simply look better.
The cable was removed after marking what went where and will be replaced with new when the time comes.
Future photo's will be with my camera and not this crappy phone.
I decided to plate it over and to ensure a nice flush fit had to remove the threaded shoulder, only a five minute job with my trusty Aldi tool, thankfully the casting in this area is relatively thick
Next job was to cut a bit of scrap and curve it to match, I can't drill it yet until I find a grommet or gland fitting for the new cable. (see question further down).
My plan at the moment is to coat a thin smear of araldite before applying and then a small self tapper at each end for extra security, am fairly confident it won't move once done.
That's today finished and a question for the leccy's please, the cable is five core, 2 red, 2 black and green, what is it's correct name and size and what would be the best fitting to put on the plate, I should imagine one of those you can tighten down to grip the cable, had a quick browse on ebay and no luck but possibly typing rubbish into the search engine....it's hard work when you don't know the correct name for bits.
