yeah parn but to add an ash pan is just another 3-4" lower and make a tray same design just with an ash collection below
you just need to make a griddle if you want to make an ash collection area below it
This is the small one I made for boiling a small camping kettle. The riser also happens to be an old empty disposable CO2 cylinder the feed tube a bit of box I had lying around and the outer skin a piece of vitreous enamel flue that was in the scrap pile.
I had initially insulated between the riser and the body with vermiculite but experimented with adding secondary air to the top of the riser - you can just about make out the ring of holes. Bit of a waste of time tbh as it takes too long to get up to temp for the secondary air to work the kettle has already boiled and your about to shut it down. For long runs it may have an advantage.
It works well enough 500ml (two mug fulls) in just under 4 mins when it's up to temperature from initial lighting probably closer to 9 or 10mins... And that's the only issue really.... Once the novelty has worn off an Alpkit brukit, jetboil, msr windboiler etc will have you drinking a coffee in less 2 mins from cold with none of the hassle.

I suppose if you kept the feed tube full it would stop air entering and smoke exiting. The more gradual the slope the better.
That's the biggest cause of them not working correctly and smoking, the key is not to fill the feed tube to allow it to draw sufficient air to prevent air blowback up the tube with the resulting smoke.
My post was in the context of having the extra pipe to draw air through as I described in Post #9
