First post here .
Just got an R-Tech MTS255S and I am impressed so far.
I do a lot of aluminium work on fishing boats and I usually use a Esab L405 with an SGS-360 spool gun.
I am getting old however and trying to get the 150Kg Esab round to a job was making me grumpy, needs two to lift it into the car and even hauling it over the bloody cobbles was a nightmare.
So I decided to look at getting an inverter based Mig which I was hoping would manage 1/4" alu and under , when I tried it out I was quite amazed at what I could achieve with it, even upwards of 1/4" was possible.
At first I tried the synergic settings but could not really get a nice spray going but looking at the voltage it seemed on the low side so I put it in manual and increased the voltage and adjusted the wire feed and got it into spray transfer. I was still using the SGS360 at this point and I find the wire feed adjustment a pain on them with a gloved hand as the pot is recessed in the bottom of the handle. I decided to get the smaller spool gun that R-Tech sell and adjusting the wire feed whilst welding was much easier due to the pot being on the side.
I liked the gun but wasn't liking the straight neck as I am used to the swan neck I have on the SGS360, you can rotate it to any position which makes life easier when welding in awkward positions. Sadly there doesn't seem to be any such options for the smaller spool gun so I decided to make my own adapter up so I could fit the swan neck and it works a treat, also has the added advantage of more standard sized shroud etc.
Not had any big welding jobs to test it out on yet but do have 3 new Cheetah Cats to be fitted out towards the end of the year so the MTS255S will get a good test and hopefully it will continue to impress.
