Hi All,
I've been perusing the forum and various threads (as well as talking to welder suppliers), but am still not sure whether I'm after the impossible or not!!
Just as a brief introduction, my only experience of welding is completing a night school college course in MIG welding (covering basic joints on 2 &6mm mild steel). Hence I've only used industrial type MIGs and nothing "lighter" weight.
So, to my requirements!!! Initially (after a bit of practice) I need to repair a small hole (about 2" round) in a chassis outrigger on my Land Rover Defender. I've also a few other wee projects in mind using much thinner steel.
The welder I buy would need to do the following (and, as above am not sure if it is possible, or indeed possible on my budget).
- Be capable of welding a Land Rover Defender chassis as well as thinner steel.
- As I will most likely be working "out the back of my house" or at my dad's drive/ garage, the welder will need to be moveable (so a standard 3 pin, 13 amp socket). I am therefore also interested in Gas/ gasless welding, but again this is a new world for me!
Would the following welder fit bill? Clarke EN 151. I ask as the chap in Machine Mart tells me it won't run off a 3 pin, but I'm sure I've read here that it will. I imagine any "lighter" a welder will not manage the chassis weld. Lastly is gassless wire any good? Will it just require more practice, or should I save and wait to by a better machine when my circumstances change. My budget at the moment is £200 ish (as I've got until sunday for the VAT free at MM!!)
any advice is thoroughly appreciated. thanks in advance,
Jamie
