The table X-axis drive on my Tom Senior milling machine is a DC motor on one end of the table, its built into a casting that hangs off the end. The electronics that drive the motor are housed in the base of the machine. Also housed in the base i have put the inverter that drives the main motor.
The past few times i have used the machine, i have got the smell of something electrical burning and once smoke was pouring out of the cabinet in the base. Using the machine today and it happened again, first the smell and then the smoke, i removed the cover but couldn't see anything charred or discoloured, or anything melted. I didn't know which circuit was giving trouble so i disconnected the dc table drive and continued to use the machine, the smell and smoke stopped, so i assume the dc drive electronics are the problem and not the inverter.
If the drive electronics are on their way out , is there a generic dc drive that i can use to replace the one i have ? It needs to drive the motor in two directions, have speed control and limit switches.
Any sparks or techs out there have any ideas ?
