Hi, Just had the quote back from the powder coaters...
In case my client can't run to this (blasting, hot zinc spray & powder coating all to BS levels), I'm looking at homespun options.
Thus far I have encountered these primers and am trying to identify the relative merits of each:
Zinc-rich, eg Teamac Zinc Rich Primer presumably similar to Galvafroid?
Zinc Phosphate eg Dulux Metalshield (>2 x price of..) Teamac Zinc Phosphate Primer
Zinc resin (epoxy primers?), eg Bonda primer, Jotun 87?
Micaceous Iron Oxide
Bilt Hamber Electrox
The blurbs all state "excellent corrosion resistance..." how do you rank them? Is price a good indicator?
Is it realistic to hope for a decade before failure (assuming not chipped or scratched as it will be out of the way in a genteel lady's garden).
I have read a number of posts on here & elsewhere & each have their proponents & detractors but most conversations are in the context of car bodies/restoration whereas this is for a garden sculpture made of 2mm new mild steel sheet, approx 2m high x 0.6 wide, so it will stick up above the fence a bit. The garden is a good 10 miles from the coast, reasonably sheltered from SW winds & UV - no more than a moderate exposure location I'd say.
I could spray (not airless though & not isocyanostuff), but I think rolling is probably a good option. I'm not after a car-level finish - eggshell-ish (the powder quote was for 30% gloss).
And then any tips on where to source these (in smaller quantites) , presumably automotive paint suppliers will carry some, but others may be more industrial - what sort of place.
I also need to top coat this with a BS colour (18e53), so that or similar needs to be available in a compatible paint type.
Any advice gratefully received.
Cheers
