Hi all
I own a Westfield kit car on which I need to make some modifications, some small and some more significant. Rather than pay someone else to do the welding, I'd like to do it myself. I've very little experience - stick welding many years ago and I've had a bash at TIG. However I think for what I need now, MIG is probably the way forward.
I'll mostly be welding inside so gas machines are ok. For chassis work it'll mostly be short runs (small brackets and 1" square chassis section) in les than 2 inch sections on steel less than 5mm thick. However I'd also like to be able to weld aluminium for some work on a bellhousing.
So, could you please recommend an appropriate MIG machine? I'd like something that's going to offer good flexibility and stability - I'm aware that the cheaper machines may not offer this but (as with everyone no doubt) I don't plan to spend the earth so second hand may be the way forward.
(edit - if it makes any difference I don't have 3 phase in the garage so need something that I can run from a 240v supply).
(edit again! I've just read the tips on aluminium welding and now think perhaps I'd better focus on steel and get someone with a TIG to do the odd bits of aluminium welding i need!!)
All advice appreciated.
Many thanks
Rich
