Hi everyone!
Well I’ve been working on welding companies and heavy structures for 6 years, and recently I received and offer from another company (and a totally different sector, nothing to do with steel). The thing is that I’ve decided to start a small business of steel structures to do in my free time - as I have a good place to do that.
Even I’ve been welding for several years, I’m not really a technician and don’t know nothing about the electrical components of the MIG welder. Here is where my problem comes.
I’ve bought a Lincoln SP-170i that was near of me, I think the price was ok (200€?), as I don’t have 3ph in the workshop. I’m using a Ar-CO2 18%, and a hyundai 0.8mm core that came with the machine, and my surprise was when I tried to weld two sections of 4mm. Just impossible, no signs of penetration. Tried in a 1.5mm thickness and a little bit better, but far from what I was expecting (it penetrates but takes its time). I have a 120amp cheap parkside flux-cored and I think that it has even better penetration than this one.
Checked the polarity, was ok for gas welding. I’m attaching some pictures of the specs of the machine. As I said I don’t really understand nothing more than the amperage and duty cycle, but I noticed that in the minimum duty cycle it says 125 amp. Maybe the 170 amp is a lie…?
Is it just not enough for this thickness? Or do you think that something has to be wrong?
Thank you all in advance.
