Hi
I am in the market for a good quality second hand mig which will be used mainly for domestic car repairs (more panels than chassis) with a high spec probably around 180a.
I have seen a Lincoln compact 250 advertised which I understand to be one of the better makes, however, when I checked the spec the amps ranged from 45a to 245a.
The wire size is ok, it takes .6 to 1.2 but I have always understood that for car work the ideal starting amp is between 25 and 30 so would the Lincoln (45a) be unsuitable for this type of work?
I have checked the spec on various websites and it is advertised as and I quote ‘Best suited for the welding of light to medium gauge material normally associated with vehicle repair’ which makes it sound ideal for my purposes but with a starting amp of 45a in the hands of a novice I am worried that I will be spending more time filling the holes that I have created.
A welder did tell me once that a good size welder can come down but a small size welder cannot go up which also implies the Lincoln would be ok but I would welcome views from this forum.
Thanks.
