Been working in the hills, weather very good for time of year, cold but dry, I used boxes of these to keep my feet warm, http://www.decathlon.co.uk/foot-warmer-30-pack-id_8373956.html
in fact, I wore my desert boots most days due to the effect of the heat pads.
Damp, and cold weather is a different thing, then I needed my lined engineer boots plus heat pads.
You cannot regulate the heat, but I found this was not a problem. I also found I was able to dispense with layers (thermal body liner) as I warmed up which helped with free movement.
I got circulation damage to my feet* during military service so I might suffer more than most, but the pads might be worth a try for some folks on here.
* Immersion foot or Trench Foot or Non Freezing Cold Injury.
(Trench Foot -means your slit trench is only 12" deep. You could end up in the Paachute giment, oyal Maines, or Genadier uards.
Because I was told if you don't dig deep enough, you will get your Rs shot off.)
