Making some mild steel side tables for the livingroom with oak tops
Going for the industrial look so how and what paint can give me that old steel natural look
Thanks in advance
Gramas,
are u looking for the natural finish on the steel ....like cleaned up industrial fittings and cupboards that's all the rage now......
if so I'd get em powder coated in a clear gloss or satin varnish.......ull get the look of polished/abraded welds etc.......this powder coat is hard wearing and would last inside the house...
be interested on how u get on......guessing that 2 small'ish side table would be about £20squids p/coated but u could use Yacht varnish tho......clean/deg the metal then rub it down with a green pan scrubber, then painvarnish..should do the job.....
remembering varnish is expensive to buy and prob cost almost as much as p/coating........
Frank
if it indoors can you not just use a wax applyed with a ruff pad as above scotch bright as indoors will not rust and just apply a coat every few months ? i have done a vice only a few months ago and i lives out side and still looks like i done it yesterday and that was just firnature wax it is under cover so not rained on but gets all other eliments on it
If you looking for the type of thing that is popular at the moment. You want either clear lacquer or a wax/oil mixture.
The hardest part is prepping and welding your steel so that you don't need any or very little finishing up.
Once you hit it with a grinder you then get a bright finish instead of the black steel finish.
Used to do some shop fittings with that look, prep is the key.
