No reason why it cannot be used for that either mate. Your dead right I use one mainly for small to medium Alu fabs/repairs when things are in a nice position on the bench. As the part becomes heat soaked you can sometimes reduce the current by half on the fly. I always use a torch switch on dc as I find it welds better when the current remains set and constant. Like you say though varying fit up gaps would go easier with variable current control.I have to say I have done a lot more squished up work than I have tig generally
Point is I think your talking beach work on ali giving it a good blasting at the start and tailing off at the end while I am thinking using it as a cheat for less than perfect fit up etc
