I didn't want to butt in on the http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/self-build-mini-digger-hydraulics.62645/ thread so thought started this one.
In that thread the topic of open and closed center systems was mentioned which is handy as I'm messing with getting the log splitter running with a hydraulic power pack at the moment. As the log splitter was always run from a mini digger the lever valve is an open center and it works fine on the digger - however on the power pack (which I assume to be a closed center system) the ram refuses to move either way (assuming oil is being sent to both sides of the ram or there's no way for oil to get out of the opposite side of the ram) bypassing the valve by piping the ram directly to the power pack everything works as expected albeit only in one direction. I've got a basic understanding of the differences between the two systems but I cannot get my head around why an open center valve would not work at all in this situation as I thought that the only difference between an open center and closed center valve was that the open allowed oil to pass through in the neutral position and closed did not? I
As far as I can tell I'll need to replace the lever valve with a closed center version but given the thought above about the only difference being the oil flow in the neutral position will it actually make any difference - I must be missing something obvious?
