Yep, definitely to small, usually cook between 20 and 40kg of onions, need a lot of space.
Get a big pot with a lid and stick all the onions in at once. Sweat them down, add a bit of water throughout the day to stop them burning.
Then just take a ladle full out at a time and finish them on the grill in 30 seconds.
