Anyone know if the fait punto (96 reg) 1.1 engine is a none interference engine or not as my nephews cam belt snapped on his today .dont really want to pull the head off to find out it only needs a new belt
tbh whenever i get a broken timing belt job i always just whack a new belt on and see what happens. if it still dosen't start you can do compression tests to get a definitive diagnosis.
i've had a uno with a snapped belt before, new belt and tensioner and away it went. pretty similar engine if not the same, he may be lucky yet .
I dont know if the fiat you state is a contacter or not. But lifting the rocker box lid will tell you clear enough if anything has hit or not.
It it looks ok, stick a belt on it and away you go.
Can you not turn the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys by hand and see if anything fouls the pistons? If nothing fouls there's a very good chance you've got away with it so it's worth trying a new belt, if something stops then don't bother with the belt.
Murex, This beast is a freewheeling engine, you therefore would probably get away without valve damage.
As a precaution a compression test is advisable though.
