Hi,
I'm about to begin a project which involves removing seriously eroded ancient steel from the interior of an old Dutch barge (my floating folly). The exterior overplate is sound but the interior plate is like Swiss cheese so has to go.
I'll be grinding (and using a plasma cutter for corners) 5mm (a lot of it is now only 1mm) steel between 46 ribs so it will be a pretty labour intensive job. The barge is 28m x 5.2m so I want to get myself kitted out correctly.
I'd like to get a helmet that will be good for grinding, plasma cutting and finally doing a bit of stick welding. I'd like to have a helmet which can fit a respirator underneath. Call me old fashioned but I used to do a lot of steel-fixing and concreting as a lad and was a bit careless. I'm a bit older now so want to really take care of myself.
I'll be doing all this with the assistance of a guy with good experience of marine and pipeline welding.
There are also some guys on the boatyard where the barge is slipped who will be helping out so please don't think I'm some buffoon taking on a crazy project alone.
I was thinking of a helmet like this:

Is it sane (or overkill) to expect to fit a respirator like these beneath the helmet? There is some old bitumen between the plates which as well as being a fire hazard I'm sure will release some dodgy material into the air.

Thanks for any pointers - I realise this is a long winded post!
Kind regards,
Paul
