Hi all,
I changed the headstock oil in my Harrison L5A when I bought it, putting in a ISO 150 Hydraulic oil as I understand that is the grade Harrison recommend. It is a very heavy oil.
This was fine in the milder months but now winter is here it is clearly far too thick, even with the lathe running for a while it cant get the oil warm enough to thin it down, it struggles to get up to speed and bogs down very easily. My workshop has no heating or insulation what so ever. -5C this morning.
I am considering putting something thinner in, a ISO 100 or 68 but I don't want anything that is too thin for when it warms back up again.
Any advice? I'll probably get it from Smith and Allen, is it worth considering a High viscosity index oil? they are a little cheaper but price isn't really a concern.
