I could do with a bit of help please.
Yesterday while changing the suspension link arms on my car I busted the side out of my 30 year old long 1/2" socket extension bar (the nuts were very tight)
Today I thought instead of binning it I would have a play on my lathe, cut off the broken end and turn it down to 10mm to fit into my battery drill. I have just bought a pair of cheap cutting tool holders from China with a set of inserts so thought I would give them a try, They were useless to say the least, the holders do seem good though.
I set the centre height but the inserts just rubbed against the metal I thought it may be hardened but a normal brazed carbide tipped cutter cut it fine. I had used the insert supplied so changed to one from the set I had bought and that was the same ? If you look at the picture you can see where it has worn both inserts!
Are these inserts for a different job, for soft metals or just rubish? Also probably a daft question but the insert is held very securely with the centre allen screw, the claw at the top doesn't look to be doing anything.
Cheers Pete
